Last night I had strange dream and I thought I should write it down. Then I thought, “What more appropriate place is there but my blog?” So here it is:
I found myself in the middle of some torn down buildings holding a vinyl album. It was a double album with gatefold (though I don’t remember what the gatefold looked like). The album was a bright purple (how appropriate) with a dark orange border. On the front it had one word “Virtual”. Prince’s name was only on the label and spine. I found a turntable in one of these buildings (it had no roof). It had a receiver and two speakers. I played the album. The first LP had a bunch of his hits (the whole album was live) and the second album had just two songs that were 28 min. each. One side was entitled “V” and the other was entitled “Work”. I don’t remember the music so much as my impression of it. It was very intense and very together (even the hits side). The sides with the long songs were incredible with all sorts of movements, time changes and very wild grooves to them. There was a mix of live and electronic percussion. It was a wild combination of things and it all worked. I remember listening to it in astonishment. Then I put the albums in their sleeves. Just then, someone walked up and I told them about my listening experience.
I sincerely doubt such an album exists. The dream may have been a reaction to a Brian Eno interview I watched on YouTube. During the interview he mentioned that Prince had something like 35 albums worth of unreleased material. It would really be weird if it did exist. But then again, I did dream of a Robyn Hitchcock song I had never heard before and, lo and behold, I saw him in concert. Amzingly, he played that very same song which was to be on his next album! Don’t imagine that will happen again but it is weird. Anyway . . . I thought I’d share
